Spiritual Formation

In the PAREF system, character formation includes development of the students’ respective spiritual lives. The following are some means whereby the student can develop a deeper love for God.

Religion Classes
Religion classes seek to impart a sound knowledge of the Roman Catholic faith. Selected teachers are assigned to take care of these classes, especially since the Religion classes are also designed to help the students grow in the virtue of piety or their prayer lives

Students are enjoined to make use of these classes to grow in their Catholic Faith. Non-Catholics are not obliged to believe in the content but will take the Religion classes as one more academic subject.

Mass Sponsorship
To help have a deeper love for the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and make it the center and root of their spiritual life, as well as to help them realize that God wants us to be saved not just individually but also as a family and a community, each class is assigned to be the participants and organizers of the Holy Mass once or twice a month. Students are also encouraged to participate in the Holy Mass as much as possible, even if they are not part of the sponsoring class for the day.

Confession
To help the students grow in the virtue of humility (by acknowledging his sins) as well as piety (by experiencing God’s love and mercy), each class has an assigned schedule for Confession, but always respecting the individual freedom of students. In other words, students are not forced to confess their sins, but are encouraged to use their freedom to voluntarily approach the Sacrament whereby they can experience forgiveness and reconciliation with God.

First Holy Communion
First Holy Communion is arranged every year for the Grade Three classes and for new students in the higher levels who have not received their first Communion. To prepare for this important event, students are given catechetical instruction regarding the Holy Eucharist during Religion classes.

Confirmation
Every year, Grade 6 students are given special topics in Religion to prepare them for the Sacrament of Confirmation. The school organizes the Confirmation Ceremony.

Retreats/Seminars
Retreats and seminars are also arranged for high school students to supplement spiritual formation.

Spiritual Direction
Spiritual direction or a one-on-one conversation with a priest for guidance regarding one’s spiritual life can be arranged by the students individually with the Chaplain.
